CRW 241 – Reading

This course will offer students knowledge in using reading as a method of learning and teaching a second language. The participants of this class will work on increasing their reading comprehension. They will also learn about various strategies for reading comprehension. This will involve brainstorming about the topic of the text, class discussion, semantic mapping, pre-reading questions, personalization, visual and contextual aids, post-reading and follow-up possibilities. The course will also discuss options of assessing reading ability and comprehension and the relationship between readings skills and general language competence.

CRW 250 – Crow Neologism

This course will develop skills necessary to create new words and phrases in Crow for new vocabulary and expressions, explore the traditional methods employed in Crow words, and identify the words and expressions that have come into existence over the years in the process of cultural/social change among the Crow people. A thorough understanding of the culture is necessary for creating new vocabulary and expressions for use in Crow.

CRW 121 – Intensive Crow for Beginners I

This is a course on Crow as a second language. It is designed for second language learners of Crow who are at the beginners level.

The course will offer dynamic language teaching methods and classroom strategies based on communicative language teaching and other modern methods, such as task-based and learner-based language teaching. The aim of the course is to provide the students with a large amount of exposure to the language and to work on all four language skills (i.e. reading, writing, listening comprehension, speaking). The course will also help the students to become active self-learners of the language by equipping them with various self-learning skills and strategies.

CRW 103 – Teaching Crow Level 3 Methods

This course is an intensive practical overview of teaching Lakota using the Speak Crow! Level 3 textbook. This course will emphasize teaching reading skills in Crow through the concepts of advance organizers and schema; teaching structures and grammar through contextualized exercises; teaching vocabulary through props, flashcards and Total Physical Response methods; and teaching conversational skills through task-based small-group activities. We will address the specific materials in each unit of the Level 3 textbook. We will also address classroom management techniques for the language classroom as well as using different teaching modalities to address diverse learning styles. We will work through each unit of the Level 3 textbook for specific ideas about teaching those structures, vocabulary, conversational patterns, and possible cultural additions.
